We’re often asked where the best places are to enjoy non-motorized winter activities near Alpena, MI—like cross-country skiing, fat-tire biking, and snowshoeing. Well, guess no more! Below is a list of nature trails managed by Thunder Bay Trails Association’s volunteer groomers during the snow season to make winter fun possible for everyone.
Alpena Golf Course Cross Country Ski Trail
The Alpena Golf Course XC ski trail is our best-groomed cross-country ski trail in Alpena, MI! The local golf course allows us to use the front nine holes to create a 4 km trail that is groomed for both skate and classic skiing. This is the only trail groomed for skate skiing in a three-county area, so dogs are not allowed on this trail. There is also a separate 1-mile snowshoe trail, with signage at the trailhead. You can access this trail at the intersection of Genshaw Rd and Dow Dr in the city of Alpena.
Norway Ridge Pathway
Located just 15 minutes from Alpena’s bustling downtown, Norway Ridge’s trails are on state land within the pine-covered Thunder Bay River State Forest. There are roughly 7 miles of groomed trails, primarily for classic skiing. This multi-use trail system is also enjoyed by fat-tire bikers, snowshoers, and dog walkers. If you use this trail in winter, please stay off the classic ski tracks. Overall, Norway Ridge offers easy to moderate difficulty terrain.
Chippewa Hills Pathway
Roughly 30 minutes south, hidden among the agricultural lands of southern Alpena County, lies the Chippewa Hills Pathway. This system features four loops totaling 9 miles of trails that weave through some of the most challenging hills in the county. Trail access is available on Kissau Rd. off W. Nicholson Hill Rd.
As of 2025, lumbering operations have begun to clear large sections of the area due to ice damage and oak wilt. Please stay safe out there!
Similar to Norway Ridge, the trails are groomed for classic skiing in the winter, but they are also enjoyed by other non-motorized users.

Black Mountain Recreation Area (Cheboygan County)
This is a real hidden gem of a trail system! With more than 30 miles of trails (yes 30 MILES). Dedicated pathways are available for both classic and skate cross country skiing, with trail difficulties ranging from Easy to Difficult. There are several trailheads to get onto the trails, but we prefer this one. You can also access the trail from the southern tip and start on a gentle uphill section (Southern Trail Head). For current grooming updates, visitors are encouraged to check the Black Mountain Facebook page. A friendly reminder that during the winter this is a cross-country ski trail only.
Thompson Harbor State Park (Presque Isle County)
This trail, groomed by the local DNR crew for classic skiing, is located about 30 minutes north of Alpena. The trail system features three loops totaling 2.6 miles and is nestled along the beautiful shoreline of Lake Huron. The park entrance is just off US-23. For trail grooming updates, call the local DNR office at 989-734-2543.
Renting or Buying Winter gear in Alpena, MI
You might be wondering: Great, now I know where the trails are—but what if I don’t have skis? Currently, there are no shops in Alpena County that sell cross-country skis. However, many Alpenians get their gear from these Michigan shops:
Cross Country Ski Headquarters (Roscommon, MI)
They have their own trail system and cafe!
Northbound Outfitters and Cross Country Ski Shop (Grayling, MI)
Located between Grayling, MI and Hanson Hills Recreation Area.
Both are roughly 1 hour and 45 minutes from Alpena. Unfortunately, there isn’t a rental option that allows you to bring skis back to Alpena, but both shops are fantastic to work with and can help you find the right gear for your budget.
As for bikes, you’re in luck! Harborside Cycle & Sport offers a range of bike options, including fat-tire bikes. They’re owned by a wonderful local family who frequently support our organization through programs and events.
We hope this post helps you discover the amazing winter recreation opportunities available here on the Sunrise Side of the state. Hope to see you out on the trails soon!
P.S. Our organization is 100% volunteer-run and funded entirely by members and donations. If you’re feeling generous, check out our Get Involved page to help us keep the trails in great shape!
