About TBTA
Our Mission: to promote and protect non-motorized trail systems in Alpena County and adjoining areas and reflect their recreational significance for the enjoyment, education and adventure of area citizens.

The Thunder Bay Trails Association began in 1997 when a group of passionate cross-country skiers approached the DNR to groom and maintain ski trails on Norway Ridge Pathway. After gaining its non-profit status, TBTA went on to sign an MOU allowing them to groom specific DNR trails in Alpena County. Since those early days, TBTA has grown to include the interests of hikers, snowshoers, skiers, and bikers.

Our organization's goal is to provide amazing trails during all seasons to a diverse range of users! We accomplish this by grooming in the winter, maintaining trails year-round, acting as a liaison between the community and the DNR, and organizing programs and events that promote the usage of our region's trails.

As of 2026, there are three trail systems maintained by TBTA in Alpena County:
-
Norway Ridge Pathway (7 miles)
-
Chippewa Hills Pathway (9 miles)
-
Alpena Golf Course Cross Country Ski Trail (2.5 miles)
The Board generally meets monthly on the first Thursday of every month, typically in room 104 CTR at Alpena Community College.
